Dangers of BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene)

Many people are unaware or never have researched what BHT is. BHT is short for Butylated Hydroxytoluene. It is specifically known as a type of a preservative, however is in a variety of different personal care products and foods that are sold in the grocery stores.

Here is the brief explanation of what Wikipedia says BHT is: “Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), also known as butylhydroxytoluene, is a lipophilic (fat-soluble) organic compound, chemically a derivative of phenol, that is useful for its antioxidant properties. European and U.S. regulations allow small percentages to be used as a food additive, but that is not without controversy as there are claimed links to child hyperactivity as well as to cancer.”

This is some what scary to even think about that the US allows this kind of preservative to be put into our personal care products and food. I know many statements from the companies state that its very little, but all the small amount adds up. What is even more scarier is that companies are not required by law to put BHT as an ingredient on the label, unless it is after it is mixed and added in. Therefore if it is used during the making of the product it legally does not have to state it on the label.

According to the MSDS Report it shows signs of respiratory and lung irritation. It also states that it is hazardous with skin contact. Anything that is put on the skin is absorbed into the blood stream. This is why I caution others on what they use for their lotions, perfumes and other things put directly onto the skin. The skin is the largest organ and just as things can be absorbed through it, so can toxins expel from it. This is why we have cases like Eczema, Psoriasis and Hives.

BHT is an added ingredient in the popular weight loss wraps that make the claims that “It Works”. Although it may work, I would question on whether or not if it’s worth it. EWG  also shows that BHT is linked to Cancer. To me this is could be what

I recently was at the store and noticed that almost every cereal box said BHT added to it. This was somewhat of a concern to me. Sugar and Salt (although I don’t recommend eating high amounts of sugar or salt) acts as a preservative so there should be no need of an additional preservative.

It is impossible to completely refrain from all products with BHT if you are just starting out on your clean eating, and natural health journey, however it is possible to limit them. By removing them will help aid your liver over a period of time. To learn more about the liver and it’s functions check out my blog post Eliminating Toxins-Liver

As always I love to hear from ya!!!
